Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 3325 Driver Charles Eric Hammand, 3 Field Artillery Brigade, 1915-1917.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection consists of three letters and four postcards Hammand sent to his mother and sister between September 1915 and July 1917. The first letter, to Hammand's mother, was sent from an army training camp in Victoria. He describes the wet and muddy conditions in the camp, mentions the recent embarkation of one thousand men, and discusses the latest news he has heard of the war, which claims significant successes for France and Britain. The remaining letters and postcards Hammand sent to his sister, Susy, while he was serving in Egypt or on the Western Front in France and Belgium. He discusses family and friends, remarks on the volume of correspondence he sends and receives, mentions the death of his sergeant, writes of the weather and of being able to see much of Belgium, and, in July 1917, discusses news being circulated of great success made by the Russians on the Eastern Front.
