Studio portrait of 1743 Private (Pte) Edwin John Phillips, 58th Battalion, of Melbourne, Vic. A labourer prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements on board HMAT Euripides (A14) on 4 April 1916. Pte Phillips was taken on strengh and transferred to the 60th Battalion on 25 May 1916. He was reported missing and declared killed in action on 19 July 1916, aged 34. Pte Phillips has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the VC Corner, Australian Cemetery, Fromelles, France.
