Description

Studio portrait of brothers 5095 Private (Pte) Arthur Gladstone (seated) and 1228 Pte Sydney Charters Pilcher, both of Charters Towers, Qld. A farmer prior to enlistment, Pte Sydney Pilcher, D Company, 42th Battalion, embarked from Sydney, NSW on board HMAT Borda (A30) on 5 June 1916. He was taken on strength and transferred to the 49th Battalion in late September 1916. Pte Pilcher served on the Western Front and was killed in action on 5 April 1918, aged 25. He is buried at the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France. A striker prior to enlistment Pte Arthur Pilcher, 26th Battalion embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Brisbane, Qld on board HMAT (49) Seang Choon on 4 May 1916. He returned to Australian on 4 June 1919.
