Studio portrait of Private (Pte) 3178 James Mathews, 34th Battalion. A 20 year old bricklayer from Albury, New South Wales, Pte Mathews embarked on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 24 January 1917. He was transferred to the 63rd Battalion on 28 May 1917, and then transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps on 14 May 1918. Pte Mathews returned to Australia on the 23 July 1919.
