F88C Steyr (Bullpup) + Cordited (MS.WWII) Handgrenades (Pineapples) Solomon Islands/Guadalcanal, Gifu + Hell's Point
Description
An F88 Steyr, the rifle used by the ADF, lies on a bed of grenades that have had the cordite removed. The grenades represent Hell's Point, the site of the battle of Tenaru in 1942 and now the decommissioning site for unexploded ordnance. In the background is the Matanikau River and the Japanese held Gifu Strong Point, which the Americans targeted during the Guadalcanal campaign (December 1942 - January 1943). This layering of weapons and locations merges past and present military actions in the Solomon Islands into a unified story.
