Studio portrait of 3227 Private Leslie Murlis Allen, 50th Battalion from Terowie, South Australia. A 23 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 27 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. After transferring to the 50th Battalion in Egypt on 29 February 1916, he went with them to France in June 1916. Two months later he was killed in action near Albert, France on 16 August 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
