Description

Portrait of Second Lieutenant Edward Lloyd Cheney, 50th Battalion from Mitcham, South Australia. A 22 year old dealer prior to enlisting on 25 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Corporal (service number 546) with B Company, 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. While serving with the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Sergeant on 6 May 1915 and after returning to Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion in February 1916. On 1 March 1916, he was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Warrant Officer Class 1 and went to France in June 1916. After being commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 26 August 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry at Mouquet Farm, France on 3/4 September 1916. Following promotion to Lieutenant (Lt) on 9 December 1916, he spent seven months with the 13th Training Battalion in England before rejoining the 50th Battalion in Belgium on 24 October 1917. He was mortally wounded in action on the Somme on 12 March 1918 and died of his wounds that same day. Lt Cheney is buried in the Codewaeravelde British Cemetery, France.
