Description
Studio portrait of 4139 Private Leonard William Barkla, 50th Battalion from Gawler, South Australia. A 28 year old wool classer prior to enlisting on 24 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and in June 1916 went with them to France. He was wounded in action at Pozieres, France on 12 August 1916 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. On recovery, he returned to Australia arriving on 2 July 1917 and was discharged medically unfit for further service.
