Description

Portrait of 1210 Private (Pte) Frank Roy Attiwill (left) and 1587 Pte Percival William Balfour, 32nd Battalion. Pte Attiwill, a shop assistant from Fremantle, Western Australia, and Pte Balfour, a jeweller from Rose Park, South Australia, prior to enlistment embarked from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong for Suez. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Attiwill was wounded in action on 20 July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his unit early the following October. He was promoted through the ranks to become a sergeant (Sgt) on 28 June 1918. Sgt Attiwill was killed in action on 30 July 1918 near Corbie, France, and is buried in the Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette. He was aged 26 years. Pte Balfour served throughout the war with the 32nd Battalion rising to the rank of Corporal. He returned to Australia for discharge, medically unfit, on 25 May 1919.
