Group portrait of officers of Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry ...
Group portrait of officers of Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry. Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry was raised at Pietermaritzburg on 16th October 1899 by Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Alexander Whitelaw Thorneycroft of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and was comprised of 500 irregulars. They arrived at Mooi River on 18th November 1899 and fought with the relief force at the battles of Willow Grange and Spionkop (with122 casualties out of 194 men) and the breakthrough at Ladysmith. Identified are Major Thorneycroft (seated centre, fourth from left, lighter coloured tunic). Three Victorians served in this unit: 39932 Trooper Louis (Lewis) Raikes Garrett , 4728 Trooper H R Cadden and 6778 Trooper Alfred Harris, all from Hawthorn, Victoria. The men had attempted unsuccessfully to enlist in the contingents leaving Victoria so had made their own way to South Africa and enlisted with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry.
