Description

Portrait of 3618 Private (Pte) Cyril Henry Robert Rosenthal, 32nd Battalion. A butcher from Freeling, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat for Plymouth, England. On arrival in England he was hospitalised with pneumonia for some weeks. After a delayed recovery from illness, medical reclassification and training in England he was not able to join his battalion on the Western Front, France until mid-April 1918. Pte Rosenthal was wounded in action near Corbie, France, on 24 April 1918 and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough. In mid-August 1918 he was admitted to hospital suffering from generalised tuberculosis and peritonitis. Pte Rosenthal died of these illnesses on 4 September 1918 and is buried in the St John the Evangelist Churchyard, Sutton Veny, England. He was aged 20 years.
