Studio portrait of 4617 Private (Pte) George Albert Williams, 32nd Battalion. A farmer from Burra, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide with the 12th Reinforcements on 16 December 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima (A35) for Devonport, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Racquinghem. Pte Williams was wounded in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 30 September 1917 and was evacuated to the 24th General Hospital at Etaples, France, where he died of these wounds on 21 November 1917. He was aged 26 years.
