Description

Dark green wool twill sealed pattern Women's Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) hat. The low crowned hat has a top stitched 50 mm wide brim which turns up at the back. A self fabric band, attached to the sides of the crown with Velcro, bears a pales green embroidered spray of leaves at the centre front, beneath the space intended to carry the Corps badge. The inner crown is lined with pale green artificial silk. A gold printed plastic label in the centre of the lining carries the logo and contact details for the manufacturer, Emerco. A black grosgrain cotton band inside the hat carries an elastic band to secure the hat around the back of the wearer's head, and a black printed manufacture's label, '"EMERCO" VICTORIA [broad arrow symbol] D.S.N. 8410-66-029-1736'.

A glazed lined label, encased in plastic, is attached to the hat with white cotton tape held shut by a lead seal bearing a broad arrow symbol and 'S & C'. The label is printed 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA DEPARTMENT OF ARMY SEALED SAMPLE NO. CLO3068 HAT, SERVICE, Twill, wool, green, WRAAC' . The label is signed and dated by the Director of Inspection, 'F Moore 20 Jul 1970'. Each side of the label is stamped in red, 'SEALED SAMPLE NOT TO BE DESTROYED OR MUTILATED'.

History / Summary

Sealed pattern uniforms and equipment are inspected and authorised by the military after manufacture, as being correct examples as specified in the relevant regulations, such as dress regulations.

Approved items carry a label to that effect, attached with a 'seal', usually lead, but sometimes of wax. The resulting 'sealed patterns' are then supplied to contractors as a true pattern, to be followed in the manufacturing process.
