Description

36989 Able Seaman (AB) Frank Scott Broad, wearing his RAN uniform and anti-gas mask respirator outside a building. AB Broad enlisted on 25 August 1939 and served on various ships and shore bases, transferring to the British refrigerated freighter Port Wellington on 4 November 1940. The Port Wellington was shelled and captured by the German auxiliary cruiser the Pinguin on 30 November 1940. AB Broad was one of eighty-one crew members and seven female passengers who were picked up by the Pinguin before the Port Wellington was scuttled. The prisoners of war (POWs) were then transferred to the Storstad and taken to Bordeaux prior to being placed in German POW camps. AB Broad survived the war and was repatriated to England on 9 April 1945. He returned to Australia and was discharged in November 1945. Broad re-enlisted in the RAN in 1949 and served until 1955.
