Description

Studio portrait of 135 Trooper (Tpr) William Aubrey Miller, 8th Light Horse Regiment, of Kalpienung, Vic. A stockman prior to enlisting in September 1914, Tpr Miller embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 25 February 1915. He suffered a chest injury at Gallipoli in August 1915 and returned to duty on 25 October 1915. In December a bomb exploded in his hand resulting in the loss of the tips of his thumb and two fingers. Tpr Miller was determined unfit for further service and returned to Australia in April 1916. Miller successfully re enlisted in the 8th Light horse Regiment in February 1917. With the new service number 3416, he embarked from Melbourne on 7 September 1917. He served in the Middle East and was promoted to Corporal in February 1919. Cpl Miller returned to Australia in May 1919. Miller was a police constable between the wars and re enlisted in the 2nd AIF in August 1940 with the rank of Captain (service number VX48816). He died in Malaya on 28 February 1942, aged 45.
