Description

Studio portrait of 404507 Leading Aircraftman Eric George Delancey Jarman RAAF, later Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) DFC. Sqn Ldr Jarman of Yepoon, Queensland was employed as a clerk before he enlisted. He completed his flying training in Queensland before embarking for England where, his service record shows, he transfered into the RAF. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) whilst serving as a Pilot Officer (PO) with 75 Squadron RAF. An Australian newspaper published the following report at the time of his investiture in November 1942: "...He received his decoration for his coolness, courage and determination in a raid on Cologne, Germany. Although his plane was hit by flak, and the front gunner, the wireless operator and the navigator were wounded, PO Jarman persisted in his attack. Displaying great skill he landed his damaged plane in Britain after he had been attacked by an enemy fighter on the return journey, and the rear gunner had been killed and the second pilot injured."
Sqn Ldr Jarman was killed on 28 April 1944 whilst on a bombing raid over Friedrichshafen, Germany when the 460 Squadron RAAF Avro Lancaster bomber he was piloting was shot down.
