Description

Studio portrait of 1321 Private (Pte) John Inglis MM, 14th Battalion. A chauffeur from Brunswick, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Inglis embarked with the 10th Reinforcements, 4th Light Horse Brigade, from Melbourne on HMAT Ballarat on 9 September 1915. Later transferring to the 14th Battalion, he was recommended for the Military Medal along with 1169 Pte John Woodier "For conspicuous valour and devotion to duty at Vaire and Hamel Wood South East of Corbie on 4 July 1918. These two soldiers attached to forward party as runners rendered valuable and continuous service throughout the operations. They went over in the first wave and though some lively opposition was met with enabled the cable party to fight its way through. Once the centre was established they continued to carry messages tirelessly and fearlessly for 48 hours and no enemy barrage was sufficient to stop them . At the close of operations Pte Inglis was wounded in the head. They both showed fine determination and set a fine example. Their task was rendered more arduous by casualties amongst the other runners". Pte Inglis returned to Australia on 28 March 1918. Pte Woodier, whose recommendation was not approved, returned to Australia on 8 October 1918.
