A view from Anzac of the fleet of warships and troop transports gathered together off Anzac Cove on the day of the landing. The four funnelled ship on the extreme left is the armoured cruiser HMS Bacchante and the ship further out to sea, between the next two groups of ships, is the dreadnaught battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth. HMS Bacchante provided gun fire support during the landing shelling, Turkish positions on Gabe Tepe, and in the next few months she shelled Turkish positions around Anzac Cove, and in particular on the 19 May during the major Turkish attack on the Anzac front line. She continued to fire in support of Anzac operations, including the Anzac attack on Lone Pine on 6 August and against Turkish positions on Chunuk Bair during 7-9 August. The island of Imbros is seen faintly on the horizon in the centre of the photograph. This photograph is the left hand side of a two part composite panorama when combined with G01534L, which was the photographer’s intention. A digitally combined panorama is available as G01534KP. One of a series of 62 photographs acquired by C.E.W. Bean from a number of sources in the 1920s. None were taken by Bean, but acquired to augment his own photographs. All were registered in his personal (C.B.) series and carry a C.B. number. All were subsequently registered in the AWM G Series under one accession number, G01534, and use a series of alphabetic extensions, commencing with G01534A, to accommodate the 62 items.
