Studio portrait of 17045 Private (Pte) Robert Hampden Murphy, 1st Field Ambulance. A woolclasser from Belmore, NSW, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) in May 1917. Pte Murphy, 22 years of age, was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge, near Ypres, Belgium, on 4 October 1917, whilst carrying a wounded man to safety. He was buried in the field, where he fell, with two others, and later commemorated at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
