Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX201016 Trooper Leonard Thomas Hinde, 2/12 Commando Squadron, Second Australian Imperial Force, Borneo, 1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one 28-page letter from Trooper Leonard Thomas Hinde to his parents, Mr Alfred Thomas Hinde and Mrs Margaret Helen Newling Hinde [née Ward], one typed transcript of the letter, and one hand drawn map. This letter is dated 10 October 1945, and was written while Trooper Hinde was serving with 2/12 Commando Squadron in Borneo. In his letter, Trooper Hinde writes in detail regarding a patrol through a region of Sarawak, Borneo. The purpose of the patrol was to inform the people of Dyak villages of the outcome of the war. Trooper Hinde writes about travelling by Jeep and canoe, finding interpreters, receiving warm welcomes from villagers, participating in ceremonies, seeing dances, participating in recreational activities with villagers, and receiving mail from home. The hand drawn map depicts the route of the patrol of Sarawak that Trooper Hinde participated in.
