235175 Lieutenant (Lt) Maxwell Thomas Turrell, 11 Platoon, D Company, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) at a jungle camp during a border patrol. The Malayan Emergency was officially over however 2RAR was on active service in the border area classified as a "Black Zone". 2RAR served in this area from July to late October 1962 and from 28 May until 2 July 1963. Lt Turrell has a beard and is wearing a new light weight uniform. A policy of "no shaving in the jungle" had been introduced to prevent soldiers acquiring the disease leptospirosis through a cut in the skin.
