The handwritten note on the reverse of the image reads “This is the guard. The corporal (Sid Wilson) is on the end with no bayonet on his rifle. Next is your humble, next ‘Billy’ Parker, next ‘Joe Joe’ O’Neil. “Billy” and the Corp are going away so I’ll lose Billy we’ve been good cobbers too. [illegible]”. Identified from left to right are 942 Corporal Sidney Anderson Wilson from Claremont, Western Australia (he returned to Australia ill on 17 November 1918 and was discharged medically unfit for further service); 1102 Private (Pte) Clarence Albury Hickman from Collins Vale, Tasmania (he arrived back in Australia on 29 August 1919); 134 Pte William Parker from South Yarra, Victoria (he arrived back in Australia on 20 February 1919); and 127 Pte James Joseph O’Neill from Mordialloc, Victoria (he arrived back in Australia on 29 August 1919). All served in the Middle East with the 1st Australian Remount Unit. This is one of a series of 17 images relating to the service of Private Clarence Albury Hickman.
