Description

Informal portrait of 944 Private (Pte) Herbert Hopkinson, 22nd Battalion, then 1st Battalion Imperial Camel Corps. Pte Hopkinson enlisted in Melbourne on 15 May 1915, joining the 22nd Battalion on the Gallipoli Peninsula. After suffering frostbite and being evacuated to the 2nd Australian General Hospital in December 1915, Pte Hopkinson transferred to the 1st Battalion Imperial Camel Corps in Egypt. Pte Hopkinson was wounded in action outside Maghdaba, Egypt, in December 1916, sustaining several gunshot wounds. In April 1917 he received gunshot wounds to his knee and was hospitalised for four months, Pte Hopkinson was invalided to Australia aboard HMAT Boorara on 23 August 1917.
