Wooden box : Jack's Day 1918
Rectangular wooden box of doved-tailed construction, with a lid secured by two brass hinges. A lock with small ornamental furniture is incorporated in the body of the box and the words, 'JACKS DAY 1918' has been spelled out on the front of the body using thumb tacks. The box is not lined and there is no key.
Wooden box associated with the Jack's Day appeal in 1918. It may have held receipts, paperwork or other material.
Jack's Day was held as a fundraising day for returning naval servicemen and Mercantile Marine sailors. The name derives from the traditional British reference to sailors as 'Jack Tars'. In 1918, the day raised 187,441 pounds in NSW and Queensland, which was achieved through raffles offering various prizes, an art auction and the auction of a cottage in Sydney. The day and its various fund raising activities came under the authority of the Department of Repatriation.
