Group portrait of the 1st Australian Pack Wireless Troop taken taken at either the Colombo, Ceylon or Bombay, India YMCA . After training at Broadmeadows, Victoria, the 54 strong unit embarked aboard HMAT Saldanha (A12) on 5 February 1916. After stopping a Bombay and Calcutta they arrived at Basra on 19 March 1916. The unit was absorbed into the 1st Wireless Signal Squadron becoming C Troop and served throughtout Mesopotamia (Iraq) for the duration of the war. Most of the unit served as small detachments often for many months in isolated areas. Later a small number volunteered to serve with Dunster Force and were still on active service well into 1919. Identified personnel include: 7683 Driver Stanley Milton Sands back row, second from right, and 7663 Sapper Edward Frederick Bishton, front row far right.
