Port Jackson, from Dawes' Battery
Description
This well-known image by Prout was reproduced as plate 4 in his publication 'Sydney Illustrated', 1842-44. It depicts British soldiers and guns at the Dawes' Point Battery in Sydney. The Battery was constructed there in 1791 as an important part of the military defences for Sydney. This image illustrates that Australia's military was predominantly British during the 1840s.
