Collection relating to the Second World War service of 34661 Corporal Lloyd Ernest Webster Stevens, 24 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, Australia and New Guinea, 1943-1944.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one diary of Corporal Lloyd Ernest Webster Stevens, and one transcript of diary. The diary contains entries dated between 31 August 1943 and 17 January 1944, and covers the period of Corporal Stevens’ service as a fitter with 24 Squadron in Australia and New Guinea. In his diary, Corporal Stevens writes about leaving arriving in New Guinea, servicing aircraft, seeing films, sightseeing at an old battlefield, eating tropical fruits, Japanese air raids, preparing aircraft for operations, rainy weather, performing in a concert, and moving airfields. This diary also contains various notes. The transcript of the diary was compiled by the son of Corporal Stevens, Mr Jim Stevens.

History / Summary

Corporal Lloyd Ernest Webster Stevens enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 31 October 1940, after previously serving with the militia. He served as a fitter with 24 Squadron in Australia and New Guinea. After the war, Corporal Stevens transferred to the Royal Australian Air Force Reserve, and was discharged on 13 January 1947.
