Anonymous (Gull Force)
Collection relating to the service of an unknown Australian serviceman, Gull Force, c 1942.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one handwritten account of an unknown Australian serviceman, relating to his escape from becoming a Japanese prisoner of war on Ambon in February 1942. In his account, the serviceman writes about leaving his unit with a small patrol, hearing of the surrender of the Australian units to the Japanese, deciding to escape, leaving Ambon Island in a leaky boat, being assisted by kind local people on a small nearby island, landing on Seram Island and being looked after by Dutch colonists, repairing the boat and setting sail again, avoiding Japanese patrol boats by walking along the coast of Seram Island, proceeding to Dobo in a new boat, a Japanese air raid, being grounded on a mud bank on the journey to Thursday Island, and finally reaching safety.
