The Advance into the Transvaal - A British Convoy in the pases of the Drakensberg
Published in the Graphic 12 February 1881 during the First Boer War this engraving depicts British troops advancing into the Transvaal via the inhospitable passes of the Drakensberg. They are attempting to break through the Boer positions and relieve their besieged garrisons further inland. ' ...our picture will afford some idea of the difficulties which are forces are encountering during the advance into Transvaal...'.
'The Graphic', is recognised as one of the finest pictorial examples of British publishing that is an historic and social record of world events up to the late 20th century. Established by a disgruntled former artist of ' the Illustrated London News' it employed many talented artists and its illustrations were of a very high artistic standard.
