Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX15102 Gunner Robert Young, 2/1 Anti-Tank Regiment, Second Australian Imperial Force, Egypt and Germany, 1941-1943.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one diary of Gunner Robert Young, containing entries dated between 15 January 1941 and 31 December 1943. This diary covers the period of Gunner Young’s service with 2/1 Anti-Tank Regiment in Egypt and his time as a prisoner of war of the Germans after being captured in Greece in April 1941. In his diary, Gunner Young writes about the treatment of prisoners by their captors, quality and quantity of food rations, being on work parties, the poor living conditions of the Russian prisoners, thinking of his wife and family at home, typhus in the camp, an escape attempt, receiving Red Cross parcels, being in hospital with prisoners of many different nationalities, convalescing in the French section of the camp, harvesting crops with women from a nearby village, talking about home with fellow Australians, stealing food, and hearing rumours about the war. This diary also contains various notes, and names and addresses of acquaintances.
