Studio group portrait of new recruits, probably taken at Mitcham Camp, SA. Included in the group, position unknown, is Private 2928 Albert Leslie Herring, 50th Battalion. Pte Herring, a farm labourer from Loxton SA, enlisted on 14 August 1916 and embarked aboard HMAT Afric (A19) on 6 November 1916. He served on the Western Front and returned to Australia on 5 January 1919. Pte Herring's brother, 1955 Pte Nicholas Roy Herring, also served in the 50th Battalion and was killed in action on 2 April 1917. (See P10461.001)
