Informal portrait of 897 Private (Pte) Leonard Frederick Bysh (left) and 925 Pte Hector William Wade, both of the 44th Battalion. Originally from Watford, England, Pte Bysh, a labourer from Subiaco, WA prior to enlistment and Pte Wade, an engine cleaner from East Perth, WA prior to enlistment embarked together with the Machine Gun Section from Fremantle on HMAT Suevic on 6 June 1916. Later promoted to Sergeant, Pte Bysh was killed in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917 and, having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. Pte Wade was wounded in action in France and evacuated to England. Following his recovery, he rejoined his unit and, on 30 March 1918, aged 21, he was killed in action. He was buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France. See also P10556.001. .
