Chataway, Vincent Maxwell
Description
Original four page letter written by Lieutenant (Lt) Vincent Maxwell Chataway, to his brother Willie, whilst he was overseas serving with 9th Battalion during the First World War. The letter, dated 12 October 1917, was handwritten from France after ten days of heavy fighting at the front. Lt Chataway writes mainly about the casualities suffered and the shelling by the Germans. He also recounts the help he rendered to a badly wounded German officer he found, who had been in the rain and cold for two days. Lt Chataway recalls, 'It almost gave me a lump in the throat to see how thankful he was for it'.
