Studio portrait of 1288 Private (Pte) Hartley James Stewart. A gardener from Watervale, SA, Pte Stewart embarked with the 10th Reinforcements, 9th Light Horse from Adelaide aboard the HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 14 September 1915. He transferred to the 14th Brigade, Australian Field Artillery on 1 April 1916, with the equivalent rank of Driver (Dvr). Dvr Stewart died of wounds in France on 23 August 1918. He was 23 years old.
