Collection relating to the Second World War experiences of Thomas Reginald Walsh, civilian internee, Rabaul, 1937, 1942.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of three letters written by Thomas Reginald Walsh. The first letter, dated 5 June, describes the volcanic erruption in Rabaul in 1937. The remaining two letters, dated 9 January 1942 and 16 January 1942, describe the Japanese bombing of Rabual throughout January 1942.

History / Summary

Thomas Reginald Walsh was a civilian telephone technician employed by the Postmaster General's Department (PMG), and a member of the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR) in Rabaul. He died at sea on 1 July 1942 when the Japanese transport ship he was on, the Montevideo Maru, was sunk off the north coast of Luzon by an American submarine.
