Portrait of 4764 Private (Pte) Fleetwood Ashburnham Curteis, 51st Battalion. A labourer from Williams WA, Pte Curteis embarked with the 11th Battalion, 15th Reinforcements, on board HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 1 April 1916. Following his arrival in France, Pte Curteis was transferred to the 51st Battalion. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service as a Medical Orderly between 26 March and 16 September 1918. Pte Curteis returned to Australia in January 1919.
Pte Curteis is seen here wearing a New Zealand uniform with rising sun collar badges. On his shoulder is the original rectangular colour patch of the 51st Battalion; it was replaced with a circular patch in 1917.
