Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX80127 Craftsman Stuart Nelson Heaton, 2/153 Australian General Transport Company, Second Australian Imperial Force, New Guinea and Australia, 1943-1944.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of a notebook and photograph relating to Craftsman Heaton, New Guinea and Australia, dated 1943 to 1944.

The notebook is written by Craftsman Heaton during his service as an electrician with the 2/153 Australian General Transport Company in New Guinea and Australia, dated 17 January 1943 to 9 May 1944. In his diary entries, Craftsman Heaton details his movements and postings, daily operations, living conditions, training, meals, local weather, longing for home and letters to family, recreational activities and a period of personal leave with family. This diary also contains notes on rifle shooting and night vision, a list of dates, locations, adjectives, equations and books, Australian’s quotes, one poem titled ‘Ramu Valley Dumpu’. Additionally, this diary contains hand-drawn illustrations of a cooking stove, shooting instructions relating to enemy soldiers, various boats and a map of ‘Mar Kham, Busa Jeep Bridge’.

The photograph depicts Craftsman Heaton within a group portrait of servicemen [thought to be 2/153 Australian General Transport Company], North Queensland, dated March 1943. On the reverse there is the inscription in pencil: ‘March 1943 training, N Qld, S N Heaton NX80127, 2nd row, 1st RHS, 2/153 General Transport, 7th Division, AIF’.

History / Summary

Craftsman Stuart Nelson Heaton enlisted with the Second Australian Imperial Force on 26 December 1941 in Paddington, New South Wales. He served as an electrician with the 2/153 Australian General Transport Company in New South Wales and North Queensland, Australia in March 1943, and later in Port Moresby, New Guinea until July 1944. Craftsman Heaton was discharged on 23 November 1945.
