H S Wanganella
Australian hospital ship Wanganella depicted by renowned artist and theatre designer Loudon Sainthill. The ship is at sea and fully illuminated. Large red cross markings are clearly visible on her bow to ensure protection under the Geneva Convention.
In March 1943 Sainthill enlisted in the Australian Army medical Corps (Militia) and on 20 May joined the AIF. He was posted to H S Wanganella and served as a theatre orderly from September 1943 - November 1945. This painting was a gift from the artist to Sergeant William Oxley (VX58820) who served alongside Sainthill on H S Wanganella as a wardmaster.
