Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX30417 Signalman (Sig) Robert Charles Chaney who served with 8 Division Signals. Comprises a small notebook kept by Sig Chaney whilst a prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese. The notebook has been handmade by Sig Chaney using his Malaya Command Military Driving Licence as the cover, and contains his handwritten poems and thoughts as a POW. Two of the pages include a letter written by Sig Chaney to his wife Alyce. Sig Chaney died of malnutrition in Japan on 23 December 1943. The notebook was brought back to Australia by NX71812 Sig Frederick de Renzie Duncan, a fellow POW in Naoetsu Camp in Japan.
