Outdoor group portrait of signallers at Broadmeadows military training camp. Identified left to right are: 19657 Gunner (Gnr) Stanley Clarence Whiting; Chas Holst (probably 3376 Pte Charles John Holst, 10th Battalion); (standing far back) 19634 Gnr Allan Lyle McPherson (later MM); 20336 Driver (Dvr) William James Rhodes and; 19616 Gnr Frank Orman Ball. Front row: 20077 Gnr Arthur William Carter; unidentified and; 19969 Gnr Horace Frederick Corbett. All identified men embarked for service overseas with the 8th Field Artillery Battery aboard HMAT Medic (A7) on 20 May 1916, from Melbourne. Gnr Corbett, a telegraphist from Port Augusta, SA, prior to enlistment, was killed in action in France on 4 June 1917, aged 23.
