Messudieh
Description
The Messudieh was an armoured ship of the Turkish Navy, with two funnels. It belonged to the Hamidieh class. In 1914, the vessel was stripped of its armament and moored in the Dardanelles as a blockship. It was torpedoed by the British in 1915. This artist depicts the Messudieh with fittings prior to 1914, and flying the Turkish Ensign and Jack. Additional interest is created through the placement of the ship close to shore, emphasising its considerable bulk. Sailors in naval uniform row towards it to embark.
