Description

Group portrait of prisoners of war (POWs) from Stalag VIIIB performing "Anchor's away". The hand painted sign being held by the cast indicates that they are from the work camp assigned to the cement works in the town of Oppeln. In order to cope with the large numbers of POWs held at Stalag VIIIB (later renamed Stalag 344), German authorities drafted POWs out to work camps. Stalag VIIIB was liberated by Soviet forces in March 1945.
