Portrait of John (Jack) Ride MC. He was the Shire Engineer for Marong Shire, Victoria, when he was granted leave of absence in August 1915 for the duration of the war. He had a hernia operation to render himself suitable for service, having earlier been rejected as medically unfit. He served with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion and returned to Australia in 1919, having been twice wounded and awarded the Military Cross. Note the Silver War Badge on his lapel, indicating retirement from military service.
