Collection relating to the Operation Solace deployment of George Gittoes, official war artist, Somalia, 1993.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of a diary/sketchbook Gittoes maintained between 25 February and 7 April 1993 during his deployment to Somalia as the official war artist attached to the Australian Army on Operation Solace/UNOSOM. Gittoes records his journey to Somalia, his initial impressions and efforts to capture photographs, the destruction in Moghadishu, lists of personnel photographed by Gittoes, his interactions with senior officers, the interest generated by his work, and his return to Australia.
