Ghuznee Medal : Corporal J Bowler, 4th Light Dragoons
Ghuznee Medal. The recipient's rank, name and regiment are engraved on the edge. Obverse: The fortress of Ghuznee with the word 'GHUZNEE' below. Reverse: Within two laurel branches tied at the base, a mural crown over '1839' and '23RD July' above. The medal is fitted with a non swivelling straight bar suspender (broken) and has a piece 38.5 mm ribbon of half crimson and half green.
Awarded to Corporal J Bowler of the 4th Light Dragoons for the capture of Ghuznee on 21-23 July 1839. The medal was issued by the Indian Government to all surviving troops engaged in the capture of Ghuznee in Afghanistan. In March 1841, Queen Victoria gave pemission to allow British troops to wear the medal. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
