Italian Defence of Venice 1848-49 Medal
Defence of Venice 1848-49 Medal. Unnamed as issued. Obverse: In the centre a winged lion standing on an earth mound, holding a sword in the right paw and with a book between his front legs. Above the inscription 'GOVERNO PROVVISORIO' (Provisional Government) and '1848-49' below. Reverse: 'DIFENSORE DI VENEZIA' (Defence of Venice) on three lines surrounded by an oak leaf wreath. The medal is fitted with a loose ring suspender attached to a ball mount and has a piece of 30 mm red ribbon with yellow stripes near each edge.
Awarded to the defenders of Venice against the Austrian Army in 1848-49 during the First War of Italian Independence. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
