Romanian Commemorative War Cross 1916-1918
Romanian Commemorative War Cross 1916-1919. A bronze cross urdee with a raised edge and blackened centre. Obverse: In the centre two F's back to back surmounted by a crown. Reverse: In the centre circle '1916' and 1918' on two lines. The medal is fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 39 mm blue ribbon with three equally spaced 6 mm green stripes.
Instituted in 1918 and awarded to all Romanian troops who served during the First World War. A number of battle bars were also issued with this medal including a bar 'TRADITIE' given to the eldest son of a deceased serving officer. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
