Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of S1189 Leading Stoker Raymond Ambrose Murphy, Royal Australian Navy 1940-1943.

Collection consists of 236 letters and telegrams spanning 1940-42 as well as one handwritten diary from 1943, covering his periods of service with HMAS Wyrallah and HMS Bulolo. The letters (mostly written to Murphy's wife Alice, but also to his children) are extensive, with near daily updates made to longer documents. Murphy writes very personally, conveying his love for his wife and family and how much he misses them, as well as detailing their daily lives and relationship struggles. He also writes about his postings, vaguely details their movements as part of transport convoys, describes his international travel (including a long trip across Canada and the United States) and often mentions the activities crew undertook on board. A period Murphy spent in hospital is also covered.

Also included as part of this collection are digital documents compiled by Robert Murphy (a family descendent) between 2004 and 2014. These include a detailed description of Murphy's service history (including prior to the Second World War) and personal background, selected excerpts and summaries from the letters and diary, and further research about the vessels on which Murphy served.
