British Pattern 1889 Cutlass and Scabbard : Royal Australian Navy
Pattern 1889 cutlass with a straight flat blade and spear point. The hilt has a turned over edge basket guard with a slot for a wrist strap near the pommel and a cast iron ribbed grip. The guard is stamped with a broad arrow and N. The blade is stamped with a broad arrow WD with Enfield proof marks on the right riccasso and '90 on the left. The Cutlass has a black leather scabbard measuring 29 inches mounted with a steel chape and tear drop frog stud locket. Apart from the blade all the metal parts have been painted black.
The markings on this cutlass indicate that it was originally issued to an Australian State Colonial Navy before 1912. It was used by the guard on board HMAS Burdekin during signing of surrender Balikpapan area during the Second World War.
