Hayes, Ronald Bruce
Two original letters, with accompanying envelopes, handwritten by NX13421 Private (Pte) Ronald Bruce Hayes, whilst serving overseas with 2/4 Battalion AIF. Pte Hayes wrote the letters to his sisters, Miss Peggy Hayes, who was school age at the time, and Miss Glory (Gloria) Hayes. Only one letter is dated and neither show from where they were written. Both letters are incomplete, either because the final page/s has been removed by the censor or they are missing. Pte Hayes writes about the places he has been since leaving Australia, including Tobruk, Benghazi, Egypt, Palestine, Athens and Crete and gives a brief insight into the fighting he encountered. In his letter to Peggy, he writes '...tales of killing & dead men are not for ears as young as yourself...'.
